Wigan boss Martinez: Man City not yet in Barcelona class

Mon, 01/16/2012

Wigan Athletic boss Roberto Martinez says its too soon for Manchester City to be compared withBarcelona.

The Latics face City tonight.

Martinez said: "As a team what measures you as a good or a bad team is achieving things and winning titles.

"What Manchester City has done has been phenomenal. I know money has been important but to get a team out of the individuals is where the difficulty lies.

"They can win any competition they go into, and they have done a remarkable job but only time will tell how good they can be.

"Barcelona probably five years ago were in a similar situation, showing good signs.

"But you can only be measured as a great side when you win titles and that's probably the exciting times ahead for Manchester City because they are showing they have everything in place to win trophies."

Barcelona leave it late to see off Real Betis

Mon, 01/16/2012

Barcelona left it late to see off Real Betis.

Pep Guardiola's side had led through goals by Xavi and Lionel Messi inside the opening 12 minutes at Camp Nou before Ruben Castro pulled one back after half an hour and Roque Santa Cruz made it 2-2 in the second half.

The visitors had Mario sent off with 19 minutes remaining for a second booking before Alexis Sanchez's shot restored the lead 15 minutes from time and Messi made it 4-2 with a late penalty.

The hard-fought win ensured Barca remain five points off leaders Real Madrid.

"The opposition gave us problems, this is normal," said Guardiola. "But I saw nothing from my team to suggest they do not have the fight in them to continue to compete for the title."

"In four or five years, Manchester City probably yes. But not now.

"Every year in every squad you have one difficult moment. At the moment we are not strong and we have lost important players, so it is difficult."

Why Real Madrid fans and Spanish government could force Ronaldo into shock Man Utd return

Mon, 01/16/2012

Is the stop-gap option of Paul Scholes' return part of a grander Manchester United plan of bringing back another former star (and we're not talking about David Beckham)?

It was simmering before Christmas, but now things are threatening to boil over in Madrid.

Hounded and jeered by his own fans and under new financial pressure from the local government,Real Madrid now face a real danger of a fed-up Cristiano Ronaldo demanding a Manchester return.

Ronaldo spoke openly last season of receiving photos from Manchester City's owners of luxury cars full of cash when they came calling. But while City will be front and centre should Ronaldo push for a move, a return to United is the more likely - particularly with his agent, the high-profile Jorge Mendes, now so close to the decision-makers at Old Trafford.

No other agent enjoys the relationship Mendes has with United directors. He now has deliveredCristiano Ronaldo, Nani, Anderson, David de Gea and Bebe to Old Trafford in the past eight years and is also driving the end of season deal for Benfica winger Nicolas Gaitan.

Mendes, who also represents Real coach Jose Mourinho, is close to Ronaldo and will know the former United star will be hurting over his fractured relationship with fans.

His friends are also upset with the treatment Real's boo-boys are dishing out. One spoke to AS only last week, declaring: "The guy has feelings and was hurt that day (the El Clasico) when he left the stadium. He could not understand that the Bernabeu were abusing him for missing a pass or criticising him against Barca saying that he always fails when playing them."

It was after that defeat to Barcelona that Ronaldo began considering his situation at Madrid. He bunkered down at home the following Sunday, with just close family and friends, shocked by the abuse coming from his own supporters. As that same confidant said last week, those closest to Ronaldo also still regularly visit Old Trafford and report back on the Stretford End singing his name.

The abuse from the stands has continued and it isn't just the fans who have turned on Ronaldo. The club's honorary president, Alfredo di Stefano, gave the Portuguese zero support when asked about the jeers.

"The public are paying and are always right. If the public asks the player to maximize his efforts with goals, he should not question it," snapped the Real legend.

Just as he knows the support he still has from United fans, Ronaldo will also be well aware that Sir Bobby Charlton or Bryan Robson would never have left him high and dry given similar circumstances.

But if the emotions of being turned on by his own will be hurting Ronaldo, the Spanish government's scrapping of the David Beckham will also be weighing heavily.

Last year the David Beckham loophole, which allowed elite foreign workers — including professional sportsmen — to pay 24 per cent tax, half the top rate in Spain, was ripped up.

It's now just broke that La Liga's high earners will pay 54 per cent of their earnings to the taxman, which will prove a massive hit to Ronaldo and his R9 empire in Spain. While he's on a massive €12 million-a-year to 2015 at Real, such a n unexpected change is sure to shake up 'Team Ronaldo'.

Scholes' return has eased the tension, but United fans have flooded the talkback channels demanding why they failed to sign Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan in the summer when all parties seemed happy to do the deal.

Could it be that the Glazers and Sir Alex Ferguson are keeping their powder dry for the summer return of Ronaldo? That money which would have gone towards signing Sneijder could now be used to bring back the one player Fergie has spoken openly about re-signing.

And with the club 's Stock Exchange float slated for later this year, what better way to attract investors than the return of Ronaldo and all the projected revenue he will bring?

It all seems to be coming together, the stars are aligning for what could be the greatest deal in the game's history.

Only yesterday, Ronaldo said in a Lisbon interview: "The Premier League and Spanish Liga are the two best leagues, but I'll be very honest. The English league is more competitive. The Spanish is competitive, but not as much as the Premier."

Pining for 'home'? As Fergie would say: "I can't believe it. I can't believe it. Football. Bloody hell."

Velasquez emotional after being snapped up by RSL

Mon, 01/16/2012

Sebastian Velasquez finally made it to the professional ranks when he was selected by Real Salt Lakein last week’s MLS SuperDraft.

The Colombian had a roundabout way of getting his dream move but was delighted that all his hard work as a junior had paid off.

Velasquez started at a small club in South Carolina before having an unsuccessful tryout with Barcelona’s youth academy and then finally settling at a junior college in the US and it is there where he attracted the attention of the RSL coaching staff who took him with pick 36 in the 2012 draft.

“I started to cry,” Velásquez confessed to FutbolMLS.com. “I was so happy. For me, it’s a reward for all of my hard work. Ever since I was a child I wanted to be a pro.

“I’ve been following the draft from here,” he added. “I didn’t watch the ceremony, but I saw my name online and was shocked.

“[RSL] told me they were interested in me and that maybe they’d pick me in the Supplementary Draft [next week],” he added.

“Just a few days ago, they told me to keep an eye on the SuperDraft. I waited and waited anxiously, and when I saw my name, I went crazy.”

Keita is leaving Barca for Mali's African Nations Cup campaign.

Newcastle winger Jonas: Ben Arfa not yet up with Messi

Mon, 01/09/2012

Newcastle United winger Jonas Gutierrez says it's too soon for Hatem Ben Arfa to be compared withBarcelona star Lionel Messi.

Alan Pardew described his goal in victory over Blackburn Rovers as the best he had ever witnessed in person, although Gutierrez, an international colleague of Barcelona superstar Messi, was more measured when asked to compare the two men.

He said: "Lionel Messi, we know what he does. I don't want to speak about him because he is something different.

"He is one or two steps above other players. Training with him is unbelievable.

"But Hatem has really good skill. Here in the English league, it is more physical and when there is contact, you don't always get the free-kick, so he has to learn about that."

Barcelona coach Guardiola praises Espanyol after draw

Mon, 01/09/2012

Barcelona were rocked by a late equaliser at Espanyol last night.

Pep Guardiola's side came into the match six points behind Madrid following the challengers' win against Granada yesterday but were hoping to cut the gap back to three by beating their lowly neighbours this evening.

They looked on course to do so as Cesc Fabregas gave them a 16th-minute lead but after failing to build on the opener, Barca - who also had efforts correctly ruled out for handball and offside - conceded the equaliser with less than five minutes to go as Alvaro Vazquez dived to head home.

Gerard Pique hit the bar with a late effort and Espanyol survived a penalty appeal for handball as Barca were left frustrated.

“The truth is that we are too well accustomed to how games go, but our rivals are also there to play.Espanyol did a fantastic job. In general, within the context of tonight’s difficult match, we controlled the match a bit better in the second half, even though we were a bit off target. After the equalizing goal, we reacted correctly, but it was too late. I cannot be dissatisfied with this team, I could never be,” said Guardiola.

The former Manchester United centre-half was speaking before they drew 1-1 with Espanyol last night.

He told La Vanguardia newspaper: "(Messi) is leading the team to be one of the best ever - it is thanks to him that we have won so many titles.

"It is a pleasure to have him play for us, and he plays the same way as he did when he was 13, only now he does it more professionally and against the very best.

"We can only hope he keeps his level up for the maximum time - if he can improve that would be great. But we should not ask for anything more, and if he continues his love for the game it will keep him at the top for many years.

"It takes many years to get to the top level, and Leo is the best in the world."

Mon, 01/09/2012

"There is still a lot of Liga still yet to be played and a lot of points up for grabs."

Man Utd, Man City alerted as fed-up Ronaldo again jeered by Real Madrid fans

Mon, 01/09/2012

Cristiano Ronaldo is furious with the way he is being treated by Real Madrid fans.

Ronaldo refused to celebrate his goal in their romp over Granada on Saturday, blanking his teammates and coldly shaking the hands of Hamit Altintop and Xabi Alonso as they sought to congratulate him.

The Portuguese ace was jeered during the game, particularly when one back-heel did not come off. He was also booed during the Copa win over Malaga last week.

This development follows on from the El Clasico defeat before Christmas, when Ronaldo was jeered regularly by home fans against Barcelona.

Ronaldo, over the winter break, insisted he was happy in Madrid.

But the reaction of fans is hurting him and with Manchester United and Manchester City monitoring developments, he knows he would be welcomed with open arms by both Premier League giants should he choose a return to England.

"He is a player who has done so much and can still be more."

Catalonia-Tunisia: Party and goalless draw at Montjuïc (0-0)

01 Jan 2012

10 FC Barcelona players played in the international friendly between Catalonia and Tunisia. Andreu Fontas was the only Barça player to play the full 90 minutes

The friendly between Catalonia and Tunisia ended in a goalless draw. At Montjuic, in front of 36,545 supporters, the side managed by Johan Cruyff deserved better against the Tunisian national team, who is in the middle of finalizing preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations that will take place in January. 10 FC Barcelona players played in tonight’s game –six featured in the starting XI, and four came off the bench– only Fontas played the full 90 minutes. It’s worth mentioning that Carles Puyol, who had been named to the Catalan side, didn’t play due to an injury to the adductor in his left leg.

Before the match, the ex-Barça player Roger Garcia received a warm and special homage: he’s the footballer that has played the most games for Catalonia (12).

Best chances for Bojan and Piqué

The Tunisians came out swinging and surprised the Catalan side at the start. The visitors created various goal-scoring chances but Valdés did well to save each one. With six Barça players on the pitch, Johan Cryuff’s side slowing wrestled control of the game away from the Tunisians. However, Catalonia was having trouble creating chances on Mathlouthi’s goal. The best chances for the Catalans in the first half fell to Bojan, who’s shot hit the woodwork on 11 minutes, and for Piqué, who couldn’t connect well with the ball when he was in the six-yard box.

At the other end, Tunisia, who had started strong, was only able to create one more chance before the break. The referee called a hand ball on Valdés outside of the area (the keeper was not booked). The draw at the break was a fair result for both sides.

Eight substitutions at the half

In the second half, Johan Cryuff subbed in eight new players. The Barça players Piqué, Busquets, Xavi and Cesc left the pitch for Montoya, Muniesa, Sergi Roberto and Cuenca. With the substitutions, Fontas changed his position form full back to central defensive midfielder. On 51 minutes, the keepers were also changed: Valdés for Casilla. With nine new players on the pitch –the only remaining starters were Fontas and Bojan– Catalonia created its best chances and enjoyed 80% of ball possession. Bojan, once again, came close to scoring, and Sergi Roberto and Cuenca were simply brilliant. The winning goal, however, never came.

Thiago: “The challenge is to progress”

The midfielder believes that 2011 has been a “gratifying” year and he hopes to “continue learning from his teammates” in 2012

01 Jan 2012

Thiago is a nonconformist. “On a personal level, my challenge for 2012 is to continue progressing and to keep on learning from my teammates. On a collective level, we want to continue along the same lines that we’ve set for ourselves in recent times, which have been fabulous.” The midfielder didn’t rule out the possibility of winning another treble, although he did say that “it would be a difficult feat.” In the last press conference of the year, Thiago said he was satisfied with the team’s performance in 2011: “It has been a gratifying year, on a personal and familial level. In my wildest dreams I could not have imagined finishing the year like this.”

Messi is the best

One of the first events of 2012 is the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala on January 9th. For Thiago, the favourite to win top prize is Leo Messi: “The whole world believes that he’s the favourite. He’s number one in this sport and after the year he’s put in, I believe that he deserves it. He doesn’t stop surprising us. He’s able to do just about anything with the ball. His qualities are unique, it’s a pleasure to play alongside him.”

Ready to play against Osasuna

Before the FIFA Ballon d’Or gala, Barça must play in the last-16 round of the King’s Cup and then in the League derby against Espanyol. On the Osasuna clash, Thiago doesn’t believe Barça will repeat their 8-0 League thrashing of the Northerners: “Every game is different from the previous one. They can design a completely different game plan this time around, both teams know each other a little better now. I don’t know what the game will be like.” FC Barcelona’s number 11 is positive that the team will be in peak physical condition for the year’s first game: “It’s always difficult to get over the turrón (traditional Iberian holiday treat), but I believe that we’ve all returned without any problems and in perfect physical condition.”

Agent: Juventus is destiny for Sevilla defender Caceres

01 Jan 2012

The agent of Sevilla defender Martin Caceres feels its in his destiny to return to Juventus.
The right-back was already playing in Turin on loan from Barcelona in 2009-10, but the club did not take up its option.
“Juve’s interest made me very happy, as it’s rare for the Juventus train to come along twice in under three years,” said agent and former Bianconeri striker Daniel Fonseca.
“I am not surprised, though. Martin has Juventus in his destiny. He is a warrior, the kind that the Bianconeri fans and Conte really appreciate. Even if he’s content in Sevilla, he’d be very happy to come back to Turin.”
Caceres would cost around €2m to take on loan for six months and a further €6m to buy him outright at the end of the season.
“When Juve didn’t take up their option in 2010, there was certainly some bitterness, but we are not seeking revenge. Changing your valuation is a sign of intelligence.
“He can play in any of the defensive roles, whether central or full-back, on the right or left. In Uruguay and various clubs he was used in five different positions. He adapts to situations, but what remains intact is his inexorable hunger for success.”

Alexis Sanchez delighted with first six months at Barcelona

01 Jan 2012

"At Barcelona I am going step-by-step," he said. "I know that I haven't done anything yet but I am happy for the career that I have had until this moment, most of all the performance I had at Udinese, when I had been chosen as one of the best players in Italy.
"On the other hand I find it important to keep on growing, and that is happening at Barcelona, where I learn very much from Lionel Messi, the best player in the world.
"This team wants to keep on winning things; I want to be at Barcelona for a long time. I want to follow the way Messi has gone.
"That means to win everything."
