Walcott delighted Henry back with Arsenal

Sat, 12/31/2011

Arsenal winger Theo Walcott has welcomed back Thierry Henry.

Walcott admits he will be delighted to be reunited with the 34-year-old legend.

He added: "It's great having him in training. He's a great finisher as always and a good leader around the dressing room.

"He'll be very good for the young guys coming through, he's so much experience. He's been everywhere to World Cups and won leagues, so he's only going to help on that side of the game. He's another option up front as well."

Walcott only played with Henry for a season before the Frenchman made a £16million move toBarcelona in 2007.

But the young hitman reckons their relationship will be completely different this time around.

He said: "I've obviously played a lot more games now and gained more experience. I'm one of the senior players even though I'm only 22.

"I'm much more relaxed around the place, but still work hard which is important. I'm not star struck like I was before, I'm just normal now."

Giovanni, who played at Barcelona between 1996 and 1999, says the Nou Camp is the best place for the youngster.

"I advise Neymar to come to Spain," he told COM Radio. "The best football for him is the Spanish one. I want him to come to Barca, always Barca.

"Neymar will keep growing, he is a star. He makes brilliant plays, he is very fast and changes direction very quickly.

"He is like [Lionel] Messi, but you cannot compare the two, because their playing styles are different."

He had agreed a scholarship deal with Leeds last November, which was due to start in the summer.

Chelsea remain confident they hold all aces over Romeu future

Fri, 12/30/2011

Chelsea remain confident keeping Oriol Romeu long-term, despite talk of him returning to Barcelona.

Chelsea are confident they hold all the aces, insisting Barca only have first option if they decide to sell – after paying £4.5 for him.

However, they may struggle to keep the player if he has his heart set on a Nou Camp return.

Manchester United and Arsenal failed to keep Barca raised duo Gerard Pique and Cesc Fabregas in similar circumstances. Losing Romeu, who has played for Spain at under 17, 19, 20 and 21 level, would put a huge dent in Andre Villas-Boas’ rebuilding plans.

Barcelona won't cough up big for Tottenham star Bale

Fri, 12/30/2011

Barcelona refuse to cough up big in their pursuit of Tottenham ace Gareth Bale.

The Mirror says Barcelona have made Bale their No.1 target next summer – but set a £25m price limit.

Coach Pep Guardiola thrashed out a hitlist with director Andoni Zubizarreta for new left-sided players, which also includes Valencia’s Spain international Jordi Alba and AC Milan’s Thiago Silva.

But Bale, 22, is the top priority and it is Guardiola who insisted the Spurs flier is the player he most wants.

Barcelona are also preparing a player plus cash deal with £20m and a range of younger players on offer to Spurs.

They are also trying to clear the decks by selling midfielder Seydou Keita and full-back Maxwell to raise extra cash.

"After being the King of England, he did not hesitate in taking the chance of a new challenge with Madrid," said Petit of the former Manchester United man.

"He has been able to assume their responsibilities fully, and may have more heading ability than Messi. But I hope that both will reach the very highest level possible with their sides."

Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp insists star winger Gareth Bale is not for sale.

After spending all summer fending off interest in Luka Modric, Tottenham are determined to hang on to their best players, and for that reason Redknapp insists Bale is going nowhere.

"It would only be a Barcelona, a Manchester City or Real Madrid who would be able to pay for him," Redknapp said.

"They are the only ones who could afford to pay the transfer fee and his wages, but he isn't for sale. The chairman has said he isn't for sale.

"If we sell him we've had it haven't we? If you looking to go somewhere you don't go and sell a player like him."

Chelsea boss Andre Villas-Boas drove the deal, offering Torres to Barca with the European champs losing David Villa for the season and was initially demanding Pedro in part exchange.

Barca coach Pep Guardiola, in talks with Chelsea chief Michael Emenalo in Brescia, refused to release Pedro and instead offered three of their top youngsters.

Blues midfielder Oriol Romeu also had a big say in the deal, convincing his three former Barca B teammates about life in London and at Stamford Bridge. The young trio are expected in London on Saturday to finalise their switch.

Torres, meanwhile, is expected in Barcelona later today.

Wed, 12/21/2011

Barcelona fullback Daniel Alves has blasted Real Madrid coach Jose Mourinho for talking down their Club World Cup triumph.

Mourinho questioned the legitimacy of the tournament this week.

"Right now we are the best, the numbers are there and that hurts. To play in this you have to win the Champions League and we did, last weekend we won two finals. Envy is bad," Alves said in response.

"I always say that Mourinho plays a role and tries to talk down the achievements of others, giving value only to what he gets. We are not bothered what Madrid does because we do not feel inferior to them and if you are not inferior then such criticism means nothing.

"Instead, what we are upset about is that he continually denigrates what we do."

"One can see how much difficulty they have in coping when he is not there.

"He is, when he is fit, a modern, top class stopper, internationally. I'd like to see him next to Gerard Pique at Barcelona. That, I think, is his level."

Some critics have questioned the desire of Guardiola's players this season.

“Everything is too fresh," said Guardiola.

"When one thinks about everything that has been won you think the end is near, it’s unavoidable. The merit is what comes after, if we continue to win titles. But at the same time, if they’ve done so well up until now, why would they stop here? We must continue this desire to keep on winning things. It will depend on our ability to find that demand. Now we return to Catalonia and we have to prepare the Cup tie. It’s a privilege to manage this group of people.”

City's exam wobble: Mancini's 10 men fail their test of strength at the Bridge

City's exam wobble: Mancini's 10 men fail their test of strength at the Bridge

Down and out: Manchester City lost their unbeaten run against Chelsea

False dawn: Manchester City took the lead through Mario Balotelli

Spot on: Frank Lampard

Directing proceedings: Andre Villas-Boas played his part in Chelsea's win

Joy unconfined: Chelsea hauled themselves back into the title race

We all know Andre Villas-Boas likes a moan, but Manchester City are not without their own list of grievances these days.
The main complaint is that every game is depicted as a test for  Roberto Mancini and his players. Each week there is a fresh assessment and a mark from the teacher. A hard-fought win away at Bolton Wanderers: B plus. Knocked out of the Champions League by Napoli: D minus. A five-goal masterclass at home to Norwich City: A. Six away at Manchester United: A*.
So consider this an exam failed. A hard exam, undoubtedly. Not one of those that has been making the headlines lately; not the type that is soft to the point of idiocy. Holding out for 32 minutes with  10 men in filthy weather at  Stamford Bridge is very difficult indeed; but it is also what champ-ions have to do sometimes. And City floundered.
Even coupled with an early exit from the Champions League, this is very far from a crisis, or even the hint of one.
City’s first Premier League defeat of the season came in complex  circumstances: a penalty not given that should have delivered a 2-0 lead, an equalising goal for Chelsea scored very much against the run of play and a man sent off.
Yet championship form is about nothing more than the handling of adversity and City’s bottom-line task was to hold out for a point. It is not much in real terms, but a statement would have been made by Mancini’s side had they drawn here.
Instead, while 19 teams would still swap positions with City, three, maybe four, will rise with renewed hope.

City may have made the best start in the history of the Premier League — and the best since  Liverpool 21 years ago — but they are beatable. Chelsea proved it. This will be no invincible season, after all.
Attention will now turn to the home match against Arsenal on Sunday.
This is all about how Mancini’s team cope with their first setbacks of a largely faultless season. Fail  to beat Arsenal and David Beckham’s insistence that City are not championship material may no longer resemble the ramblings of a deluded Manchester United fan.
Mancini will no doubt curse the penalty award that never came. Yet City could have faced harsher disciplinary action against Yaya Toure and Vincent Kompany, so there were breaks for both sides.
Their greatest misfortune was that, only nine minutes before Joleon Lescott’s fateful handball from man-of-the-match Daniel Sturridge, Chelsea manager Villas-Boas had seen fit to introduce a substitute: Frank Lampard, first-choice penalty taker for club and country. He did not disappoint.

With nine points now separating first and fifth, that could prove some cameo come May.
It would have been easy for any team to go under here. When Gael Clichy was rightly sent off for two fouls on Sturridge, Chelsea were already in the ascendancy. Yet City are not meant to be any team.
They are the champions elect. We have seen United refuse to yield at these moments on  countless occasions. Perhaps this fact provoked Beckham’s cynicism.
Even for Barcelona, winning titles is not always about beauty. Sometimes a game boils down to football’s most basic element:  digging in against the odds and a very good team.
For all their recent inconsistencies, Chelsea remain that. They still have players like Juan Mata and Didier Drogba capable of a flash of match-defining brilliance; they have arguably the young player of the year in Sturridge.
And they have, in Villas-Boas, a manager gaining confidence and credibility.
It helps that this was the second big match in which his decisions were vindicated by the result. Having been utterly outplayed for the first 25  minutes, Chelsea drew level through Raul Meireles and then took the game to the League leaders.
It was a true Jekyll and Hyde performance. It is hard to imagine a time when Chelsea looked more vulnerable than early on here. City scored after one minute and 41 seconds, could have added a second after 11 minutes and had a strong penalty appeal turned down three minutes later.
Yet, by changing the high-line defence midway through the game, Villas-Boas seemed to accept that his is not the only way.

There was a degree of humility in the switch; it takes a confident man to alter course in this way.
Maybe there was a rush to judgment around Chelsea as the manager claims but, so wildly differing was their form in just one game, the jury remain out.
That much-debated  defensive line is still capable of leaving Villas-Boas’ inherited players exposed and  perhaps we will only understand its merits when he can handpick his personnel.
So this is still very much a work in progress and even club executives seem to accept that.
Before the game, chairman Bruce Buck was pleasant as usual, but a  little on edge.
‘How are you, Bruce?’
‘Well, I’m fine at the moment,’ he replied. It was as if Chelsea saw themselves as underdogs, a state previously considered unthinkable at home.
There is promise here, but uncertainty, too. Will Villas-Boas get an opportunity to plan long term? Who knows? Buck recognises that  management stability is important in any period of transition for the  playing staff. Yet to Roman Abramovich, the owner, it remains utterly unacceptable to forego success while redecoration takes place.
This makes coaching Chelsea close to the impossible job.
Villas-Boas must win major tournaments while overhauling an ageing squad and safeguarding the future. Oh, and entertain. He pulled it off against Chelsea, but there are still seven points between his team and Manchester City.
If it remains that way at the end of the season, occasions like this will be forgotten and a more brutal reality will take hold.
No wonder he feels a little put upon at times.

Belhadj: Barça match is a celebration

Belhadj: Barça match is a celebration

13-Dec-2011

Belhadj: Barça match is a celebration
“Many of football’s big names dream of playing in a Club World Cup semi-final against Barcelona, but we’re the ones who will have that pleasure,” said a beaming Nadir Belhadj after he helped Al-Saad to one of their most memorable achievements to date.

The first quarter-final of the FIFA Club World Cup Japan 2011 pitted Asian champions Al-Saad against their African counterparts, Esperance, in what promised to be a tight encounter. Al-Saad’s Uruguayan coach Jorge Fossati sent his men out to play as a solid unit and resist Esperance’s attacking threat, while making the most of their own pacy forwards to cause damage at the other end. The plan paid off, with the Qatari side now safely through to the last four of the competition.
FIFA.com caught up with Belhadj for an interview as he left the dressing room after the match. The versatile Algerian wide-man was one of the architects of Al-Saad’s hard-fought 2-1 victory over Esperance, whose defeated players cut dejected figures at the final whistle.
“We’d expected that kind of attacking approach from Esperance, who really are a good team,” said Belhadj, clearly delighted to have played a part in coach Fossati’s winning tactical system. “By playing in a compact and disciplined manner, it was obvious that we’d get chances. The Tunisians weren’t able to make the difference when they had the opportunity. We took our chances and held on well for 90 minutes. The coach switched from four in defence to five, which helped create more space in front of the midfielders."
In the 49th minute and with Al-Saad leading 1-0, Belhadj stood over a free-kick in an apparently innocuous position. What followed was a well-executed set-piece, proving that time spent on the training pitch is seldom wasted. The 29-year-old’s long ball into the box found Lee Jung-Soo, who nodded back across goal for defender Abdulla Koni to apply the finishing touch. “He [Koni] is not used to scoring goals, so I’m happy for him,” said Belhadj, who sometimes spends up to 45 minutes at a time practising set-pieces with his team-mates.
Just 18 months after he joined Al-Saad in 2010, Belhadj already has an AFC Champions League winner’s medal to his name and the exciting prospect of a FIFA Club World Cup semi-final against Barcelona just days away. “We should treat this match as a celebration,” he said. “We’ll be well-prepared to put in a good performance, but the main aim will be to enjoy ourselves. We’ll need to pull together.”
Realistic aims“This Barça side is the best in the world, as we saw once again with their impressive display in theClasico against Real Madrid,” added Belhadj, who counts Lyon among his former clubs. “We mustn’t focus on one player alone, because the danger can come from anywhere. You only need to look at the kind of level their youngsters are capable of playing at,” he added.
So, does Belhadj think Al-Saad’s hopes of reaching the final amount to anything more than a dream? “We’re talking about Barcelona here, so we have to stay focused,” said the Algerian international. “Lionel Messi and Barça are on another planet. We’ll play with the resources we have, and with a group of players that has already helped us to achieve big things. The chance to face Barcelona is extremely satisfying in itself,” added the former Portsmouth player, who has already faced Messi at international level and crossed swords with reigning European champions Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League while at Lyon.
Belhadj knows first-hand that when it comes to facing Barcelona, and Messi in particular, simply doing your homework is rarely enough. “It is possible to guess what Messi is going to do, but actually stopping him from doing it is another matter,” he concluded.

Neymar: Better than Messi?

Star of Santos, who should meet Barça in World Club final this week, is gaining worldwide acclaim. But for now, he's happy in Brazil he tells Sam Green in Rio
13-Dec-2011

He is an unlikely symbol of the new Brazil – a skinny, mohawked 19-year-old with a shy smile – but Neymar da Silva Santos Junior is just that. Already a superstar in his homeland, Neymar is riding the crest of a remarkable economic boom. He has a pay packet to rival the top players in Europe and this week can test himself against the best at the Fifa Club World Cup in Japan. The message from Brazil is clear: watch out Barcelona and watch out Lionel Messi.
"It is certain that Neymar will be the best in the world by 2014, without doubt," says his coach at Santos, Muricy Ramalho. "Now Messi is the best, Cristiano Ronaldo is second. Neymar is third best in the world, but by the World Cup here in Brazil, he will be first."
Pele goes even further. "I think Neymar is better than Messi, more complete," says the man who brought Santos global fame. The comparisons in Brazil are relentless. When Neymar scored four goals for Santos on the same day that Messi hit a hat-trick for Barça, shortly before both were included on the 23-man shortlist for the Ballon d'Or last month, the front page of sports daily Lance! screamed "Learn Messi!"
Neymar himself is humble, and a little weary, when asked about Messi when we meet at Santos's training centre in a room adorned with murals of the club's heroes (Pele, Zito, Robinho, Elano), shortly before the squad left for Japan.
"Look, I don't know," he says. "To get where Messi has got to, you have to work very hard, train all the time, be totally dedicated. Yes, I hope one day I can arrive where Messi is now. So I have dedicated myself to this, always training and working, to try to reach this. I hope I can play against Messi in Japan. I would be honoured. Today he is the best in the world."
Neymar turned down Chelsea and Real Madrid before signing a new contract with Santos last month that will net him about £550,000 a month. With a popularity that transcends club loyalties, based largely on the hope he can inspire Brazil's return to the jogo bonito after the unpopular Dunga years, keeping Neymar at home became a national issue.
The Santos president, Luis Alvaro Ribeiro, even called on the Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, to help. The Spanish bank Santander, a major player in Brazil, took out double-page newspaper adverts proclaiming itself proud to have contributed to keeping the player at home. It is one of seven companies tied into an imaginative contract with Neymar and Santos, the club realising it needed help topping up the £90,000-a-month salary it could pay.
"I have no regrets," Neymar says about turning down Chelsea and Real. "It is still a dream of mine to play in Europe, but I don't know when. If I leave I want the moment to be right. But I will stay with Santos until 2014, it is definite."
With the release clause in his contract having been increased to €70m (£59.2m), and the option of walking away on a free after the World Cup, this looks the likeliest scenario, although a huge offer from Europe in the meantime could still change the landscape.
Ramalho believes Neymar will stay until after the World Cup. "Every world champion has a different player, a special one. Brazil in 2014 will have Neymar who will make the difference. The people who advise him understand that after the World Cup, when he will be 22, he will be better prepared for Europe."
The wider significance of the deal is not lost on Ramalho, who is known as "Professor" by his players. "Santos showed the world and all the other teams in Brazil that it's possible to keep hold of your best players. This was very important for Brazilian football. It means we can become better, our championship can become stronger. Foreign clubs always come to take our best players but this time Santos showed it can be different."
While Europe has been tightening its belt, Brazil's economy grew by 7.5 per cent last year, a record since 1986, with only China and India ahead in GDP expansion. Forbes reported this month that 19 new millionaires have been created per day in Brazil since 2007. Government figures showed in October that, for the first time in 20 years, the number of foreigners coming to live in Brazil surpassed the number of Brazilians leaving to work abroad.
Does Neymar see himself as a symbol of Brazil's increasing global confidence? "I don't know about that, but I know Brazil is growing stronger and I stayed because it was the right thing for me at this time, for my happiness."
Despite the apparent economic sea-change, Neymar acknowledges it is still harder to get nominated for the Ballon d'Or – the title of best in the world – while playing outside the European leagues. He was the only such player on the 23-man list, although he did not survive last week's reduction to three, with Messi left as the favourite to become the first to win it in three successive years.
"It's a little more difficult to do this when playing far from Europe, but I believe South American football is growing stronger," says Neymar, who was also the only non-Europe-based player on the 55-man shortlist for the FIFPro world XI of the year. "Maybe not today, but maybe in one or two years this nomination will prove to be very important for South American football."
Neymar will go up against Messi for Fifa's best goal of the year, his remarkable slalom through the Flamengo defence competing with the Argentine's flick and volley against Arsenal and Wayne Rooney's overhead kick against Manchester City.
Neymar inspired Santos to triumph in this year's Copa Libertadores, South America's Champions League, driving them through the earlier rounds, scoring in June's final and being named player of the tournament. This earned Santos a ticket to the Club World Club, which started last week in Toyota City and ends in Yokohama on Sunday. Santos start their tournament in the semi-final against Japan's Kashiwa Reysol tomorrow while Barça will play Al-Sadd from Qatar on Thursday in their last-four match.
Beat Reysol and Santos will be up against the team many say are the best ever, and who confirmed their superiority over Real Madrid on Saturday night. Around the King Pele Training Centre, one word is repeated like a mantra when Santos staff are asked about Barça: "Possession."
"It seems impossible, the amount of time they keep possession for," Neymar says. "So it will be very difficult. I don't know how we'll do it, but Professor Muricy will take care of that. We just have to train hard."
Ramalho has a pedigree to worry Pep Guardiola. He won the Brazilian championship with Sao Paulo in 2006, 2007, 2008 and again in 2010 with Fluminense, then turned down the Brazil job before guiding Santos to the Libertadores. He will be strong favourite to lead Brazil into the World Cup should the under-pressure Mano Menezes fall.
"Possession..." muses Ramalho, when asked about Barcelona. "They do two important things. They know how to keep possession very well and they pressure you a lot when you have the ball. But when we have possession we have to go for Barcelona, we have to counter-attack and gamble."
Ramalho believes that when Neymar does move on, the Nou Camp would be the ideal destination: "Technically, Barcelona would be the best place for Neymar, their style is very similar to Brazilian football. Today, Real Madrid play very tactically, with lots of marking, this would be a little difficult for Neymar.
"Now, England would not be right for Neymar, it would be too difficult. The play is very hard, the marking very tight. But certainly he will become better prepared for this and there are many very good teams like Manchester United, although Arsenal are most similar to Brazilian teams."
The one-hour drive from the vast urban sprawl of Sao Paulo to Santos takes you down a mountainside road, offering breathtaking views of subtropical forest and the sea. But while the journey and arrival in the small port city may feel like a trip into a more innocent, parochial setting, Santos are no strangers to the big time. Back-to-back wins in the Intercontinental Cup, the precursor to the Club World Cup, made them famous in the Sixties, Pele fronting the team which beat Benfica in 1962 and Milan in 1963.
"Santos always has teams that attack, who are brave and play with charisma. It is the team that is in my heart," says Neymar. He is also in the club's heart. Staff speak glowingly about how polite and accommodating he is. Before there were stories of rows with rival players and referees. The previous Santos coach, Dorival Junior, lost his job after falling out with Neymar. Guardiola was reportedly put off a bid by such stories. But Santos are working hard to help him become calmer and more focused, with four full-time staff looking after him.
He has also become a father. His three-month old son, Davi Lucca, was another factor in his staying. "Definitely, I want to see my son grow up, I want to be near to him," Neymar says.
There will be further tests of his patience. Long-lens paparazzi shots of him cavorting on a yacht in Dalmatian-patterned swimming trunks with friends, including a female Brazilian reality TV "star", recently made the front pages. Do such intrusions annoy him? "No, I understand what is happening to me now, I'm becoming accustomed to it. I'm the kind of person who loves to stick with my friends, close to my family. It doesn't matter how famous I become, how rich I get, I will never change."

Now meet Ganso, the thinking fan's Neymar
While the main focus will be on how Neymar shapes up against Lionel Messi if Santos and Barcelona deliver the expected Club World Cup final on Sunday, some observers will be more keen to see how Brazil's other major young hope fares.
For many, Paulo Henrique Ganso (right) is a better player than Neymar, but one who has been touched by ill fortune. The 22-year-old is far less flashy than the 19-year-old he calls his "little brother". Ganso does not try many tricks and does not appear in the gossip pages. His game is more about intelligent use of space, perceptive passing, bringing others into play. A thinking fan's Neymar, it could be said.
His style is upright and elegant, and at his best he has been compared to a young Zinedine Zidane. But a knee injury last year sidelined him for six months and related thigh-muscle problems have blighted his return this year. He looked set for Europe, with the two Milan clubs leading the chase, while Chelsea and both Manchester sides have also been linked to him. But the fitness worries and a buy-out clause of €50m have stalled that dream.
Ganso will discuss his future after Japan, and while it had been thought his exit was inevitable, Neymar's pledge to stay until 2014 could encourage Ganso to follow suit. "After the Club World Cup we can think about the future," he said. "I still have the dream of playing in Europe. I do not have a strong preference for which league, but it must be a big club." First the focus is on setting up the dream tie with Barcelona. "This is a very good opportunity for us to show what we can do. We must concentrate on playing our usual game, joyful football, trying to score goals." Sam Green
