The players worked as hard as they did against Sociedad, Milan & Valencia - Barcelona's Pep Guardiola

The 40-year-old tactician congratulated his team and told reporters that the side had put in the same effort as they did in the games they had failed to win this season

Barcelona coach Pep Guardiola let his players take the praise after their 5-0 demolition ofAtletico Madrid on Saturday evening at Camp Nou, while stating that his team had not worked any harder than they did when claiming recent draws against Real Sociedad, Milan andValencia.

A superb Lionel Messi hat-trick, an own-goal from Miranda and David Villa's strike gave the Catalan outfit a resounding win following the midweek 2-2 draw at the Mestalla.

The victory maintains the side's 100 per cent record at home in La Liga this season and Guardiola was keen to step away from the plaudits.

"The credit goes entirely to the players. They worked as hard as they did in the Anoeta Stadium, Milan and the Mestalla. Today we were better than Atletico Madrid," Guardiola told reporters after the game.

Guardiola was also keen to state that his side's dominance was helped by their ability to keep Radamel Falcao quiet, who has scored five goals in Liga so far this season.

"We tried to remove the ball from the danger area as much as possible because Falcao does not make mistakes in those kind of situations," he added.

The 40-year-old tactician also stated that he was "satisfied" to keep a clean sheet after leaking two goals midweek against Unai Emery's men.

Barcelona now travel to Belarus for their Champions League encounter against BATE Borisov with the two sides due to meet on Wednesday evening.

Barcelona striker David Villa has hailed team-mate Lionel Messi, saying the Argentina captain is one of a kind.

The 24-year-old has been in a rich vein of form this season and his hat-trick in Saturday's 5-0 win over Atletico Madrid has put him at the top of La Liga's scoring charts, with eight goals.

Messi has said he is looking to surpass Cesar Rodriguez's scoring record for Barcelona, and while Villa played down individual records, he noted that the diminutive forward is in a league of his own.

"Messi does incredible things," Villa said at a press conference. "His stats make you cover your eyes. He cannot be compared to anyone. We are delighted."

The 29-year-old striker, who has so far scored five goals in all competitions this season, stressed he is happy with life at Camp Nou.

"Being at this club is a symptom of happiness," he noted. "I am very happy both on and off the field and I hope to stay here for many more years.

"I am not used to being a substitute, but in the dressing room there are 15 or 16 players who are not used to it either."

Barcelona play football from another planet, says Atletico Madrid's Thibaut Courtois

Sep 26, 2011
The Belgian goalkeeper was full of praise for the Catalan side, and Lionel Messi in particular, in the wake of last weekend's 5-0 loss

Thibaut Courtois

Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois has expressed his admiration for Barcelona in the wake of his side's 5-0 La Liga loss at Camp Nou against the Spanish champions at the weekend.

The Vicente Calderon club were hopeful of achieving a positive result against the Catalans, but they were trailing 2-0 within 15 minutes and were eventually heavily beaten.

"Barcelona play football from another planet. I feared for a real thrashing after their good opening, and, to be honest, it was a bit of a whipping in the end," Courtois was quoted as saying by Sporza.

"We started the match too timidly and paid them too much respect. We should have shown a bit more flair."

Courtois then went on to praise Lionel Messi, who netted a hat-trick on Saturday, as he feels the Argentine is the best player in the world.

"It's quite a special feeling to see him dribble in real life. He definitely is the best player in the world."

Atletico have dropped to eighth spot in the Primera Division following their loss, while Barcelona now sit second in the table.

Paris Saint-Germain not giving up on Barcelona's Eric Abidal - report

Sep 26, 2011

The experienced defender is eager to end his career at the Catalan giants, but the Ligue 1 side are looking to lure him back to his native country

Eric Abidal (FC Barcelona)

Paris Saint-Germain have not given up hope of signing Barcelona defender Eric Abidal just yet as they remain keen to lure the France international back to Ligue 1, Sport reports.

The left-back's contract with Barcelona is set to expire next summer, and PSG are closely monitoring his situation at Camp Nou.

The former Olympique Lyonnais ace recently downplayed rumours hinting at a move to Paris, declaring that he is keen to sign a new deal with his current club and finish his career there.

However, contract talks have not led to an extension yet, as both parties have been unable to reach an agreement on the length of a proposed new deal.

Paris Saint-Germain, on the other hand, are ready to give Abidal a long-term contract and meet his financial demands, as the French giants see the 32-year-old as the perfect addition to their back-line.

PSG director Alain Roche recently met with Abidal's representative to discuss a potential move, and the Ligue 1 side will continue to closely monitor the defender's situation in the upcoming weeks.

Arsenal boss Wenger happy to liken Van Persie to Messi

Mon, 09/26/2011

Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has likened skipper Robin van Persie to Barcelona star Lionel Messi.

Van Persie brought his Arsenal goal tally to 100 when he bagged a well-taken double to help the Gunners end a difficult week on a high, with a comprehensive 3-0 victory over 10-manBolton Wanderers at the Emirates Stadium.

"I see similarities positional-wise with Messi. He comes deep, he likes to turn up up front as well," Wenger said.

"Positional-wise he doesn't play like a real centre forward. But when you look at his movement around the box he's very intelligent, goes on diagonal runs.

"I always thought his first touch was so good that he can make a difference even in a tight space."

Barcelona boss Guardiola has no words for Messi brilliance

Mon, 09/26/2011

Neymar has not signed a contract with anybody - Santos president Luis Alvaro Ribeiro

Sep 25, 2011

The club's chief has denied that the youngster has agreed to join La Liga rivals Real Madrid or Barcelona but did admit he is struggling to hold onto the forward

Santos president Luis Alvaro Ribeiro has ensured supporters that star striker Neymar has not signed a contract with another club.

The 19-year-old has been heavily linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid, with the latter reported to have already come to an agreement for the transfer of the player.

However, Ribeiro has denied such talk and has also told Brazilian media he has no knowledge of Madrid taking out an insurance policy in case the forward gets injured.

"There is no contract signed with anybody," Ribeiro told Lancenet.

"I do not know if this is right [in regards to Madrid taking out insurance on Neymar] but it matters little to me. But of course, if he is to play outside of Brazil, he will need insurance."

The Santos chief also admitted that he is struggling to hold onto the Brazilian international as the club are unable to compete with the likes of Madrid and Barcelona financially.

"I do not have the situation to compete with them [Real Madrid] in financial terms. I'm struggling. There is evidence that they have scored a goal but the game is not over. It is zero-zero, or rather, just zero. Neymar is still a Santos player," he added.

Ribeiro concluded the interview by stating that holding onto Neymar is 'a matter of national interest' with any possible deal for the striker likely to involve a figure of €45 million, the figure stated as the player's buyout clause.

The highly-rated youngster has so far made 12 appearances for the national side, scoring six goals in the process.

Atletico Madrid's Gregorio Manzano: It is physically impossible to outplay Barcelona

The Atleti coach was upset with the final score but was the first to admit that his side could not live with the sheer dominance of the champions and their five-goal performance

Gregorio Manzano, Atletico Madrid (Getty Images)

Atletico Madrid coach Gregorio Manzano has conceded that his team had no chance of beating Barcelona at their own game, after suffering a heavy 5-0 defeat to the champions on Saturday at Camp Nou.

The capital outfit failed to exert any kind of threat on Pep Guardiola's side, and paid the price for their wrong approach to proceedings by being thrashed in Catalunya, courtesy of a Lionel Messi hat-trick, plus a strike from David Villa and an own goal from Miranda, and Manzano feels there was only one winner in the battle for possession.

"We faced a team in Barcelona that is currently settling into a rhythm," he said during the post-match press conference . "They have great players that offer tactical variety.

"It is unlikely that any team in the world would be able to win the majority of possession, it is physically impossible. To win here on those conditions, you'd have to have the performance of the century."

However, despite losing in such convincing fashion, Manzano did express his unhappiness at going down to such an unflattering scoreline, but reserved empathy for big-money signing Falcao, whose display was outshone by that of his Argentine counterpart.

"I'm a little angry [with the score], but I admit that this is one of the best teams of recent times," he continued.

"Falcao has been in the gray, like the whole team, but there was not even a chance [in this game] to show how good a player Falcao is."

Atletico Madrid drop down to seventh in the Primera Division table, and will strive to get back to winning ways on Thursday, when they face Rennes in the Europa League.

Barcelona's Lionel Messi praises team-mates for match-winning performance against Atletico Madrid

The attacker remained as modest as ever despite hitting an impressive hat-trick on Saturday, preferring to shy away from the limelight and brand the five-star win as a team effort

Liga BBVA: Barcelona-Atlético de Madrid: Lionel Messi

Barcelona forward Lionel Messi has applauded his colleagues for helping him record an emphatic hat-trick during his side's 5-0 win over Atletico Madrid in La Liga on Saturday.

The diminutive No.10 was in imperious form once more, with Gregorio Manzano's men being the unfortunate recipients of his display, as he scored three of Barca's five goals on the night at Camp Nou, but Messi immediately put the focus on the rest of his team after the match.

"I must thank my colleagues," he told AS. "We have showed that when we play well, we enjoy our football.

"It was a difficult game as Atletico came and stood their ground well," he continued. "They possess a great team, and earned our respect from the first minute, but the goal put the game into our favour and we quickly took control."

Barcelona regain second place in the Primera Division standings, but it may only be a temporary move as they await the result of Malaga's visit to Zaragoza on Sunday.
